Tēna koutou e te whānau,
Wow, we have had another two weeks of awesome learning opportunities and experiences at Arataki School. All of our tamariki have participated in athletics with a number of our Year 5 & 6 students going through and competing at the Mount Cluster athletics competition on Wednesday.
Thank you very much to the whānau who came and helped at our working bee on Sunday 10th November. At the working bee, our back fence surrounding the field was painted black. It looks much tidier and has really enhanced the look of our school.
Have you come to see our gardens at the back of the field? Our gardens were part of the Garden and Art Festival. It gave our students the opportunity to share their gardening skills with the public. We are growing many fruits and vegetables as well as flowers to enhance the bees and insects in our garden area. If you haven’t had a look yet, please make sure that you do.
Christmas in the Park is approaching quickly. It is on Thursday 5th December from 4:30pm - 7:00pm. This is an opportunity for our tamariki to sell items that they have made in class. We will have students performing items on stage, Santa’s grotto, raffles, BBQ, food stalls, cake stalls. This year, we will be sending home a cake board with the oldest children in the whānau. We are asking if each whānau could make/bake an item that we can sell at our cake stall. More information will be sent home closer to the time. Christmas in the Park will be on the field and we are encouraging our families to bring a picnic blanket and enjoy the afternoon with us.
On Friday we held our Teacher only day. Our teachers began their professional development in the new curriculum refresh. There has been a lot of information in the media about structured literacy and mathematics. At Arataki School we have been teaching children to read and spell using a structured literacy approach for the past two years. We are well equipped to make a smooth transition to the new curriculum documents. For mathematics, schools were given a choice of four maths programmes to use. Arataki School has chosen to implement the programme titled ‘Math’s no problem’ which we will be teaching from 2025.
Toitu Te Tiriti - On Tuesday it was amazing to see our Kopukairoa rangatahi standing for them and their whānau in the nationwide hikoi. Our tamariki organised their own hikoi on the Arataki school field which was rawe!
Montessori Market day - on Wednesday 27th November our Montessori classes are holding a market day at lunchtime. They will be having stalls selling items to students in the school. All items will either be $3.00 or $5.00.
We have busy weeks ahead. Please look at the “Dates for the Diary” below, the comms from HERO and our Facebook page.
Kia pai tō rā whakatā
Ngā mihi nui,
Vicki Hiini - Tumuaki
